DRTL Driving Instructor course
The DRTL Driving Instructor training (ADI) course has been developed by Approved Driving Instructors and is delivered by ordit registered Approved Driving Instructors.
There are three stages to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor our course has been designed to give you all the tools you will need to successfully pass all three stages.
We supply three easy-to-follow modules that combine home-based learning and 1-to-1 time with your dedicated personal coach.
Study at your own pace and only pay for the hours you require; it normally takes from 6 to 18 months to complete.
To join any ADI course you need to be over 21, and have held a valid driving licence for at least 3½ years. You'll need a commitment to learning and an ability to relate well to your pupils, keeping calm, maintaining control and generating trust. You will also need to be able to read a number plate from 90ft / 27.5m.
Driving Instructor Training Course
The course includes learning tools and techniques to help you, including workbooks and tuition aids, we have tried to break down the comprehensive workbooks into manageable sections of two hours each. Included in the workbooks is information about business and marketing skills to help you once you've qualified.
To become a qualified DSA (Driving Standards Agency) Approved Driving Instructor, you'll need to pass three parts of the DSA test.
Part 1 – Theory
Working at home with the DRTL's workbooks and manuals you can arrange your part 1 test when you are ready. There is also a hazard perception test in part 1, in which you'll need to identify hazards in video clips.
For part 1 of your DRTL training, you can purchase our Part 1 learning pack and if you require assistance with any of the material you can purchase hours with your coach as you require.
Part 2 – Driving ability
This module consists of practical driving sessions and is designed to bring your personal standard of driving up to the standard required by the DSA. Again you'll train with your dedicated coach on a 1-to-1 basis, who will prepare you for a one-hour practical test of your driving ability.
For this part of the test, you'll demonstrate a high level of driving technique, anticipation and consideration of other road users. This module of our course on average requires 15 hours of 1-to-1 training.
Part 3 – Instructional ability
In this part of the test, you'll need to demonstrate that you can teach others. In two half-hour sessions the examiner acts as a pupil in a role-play situation. For this module, you will require a minimum of 40 hours1-to-1 training with your DRTL dedicated coach.
After passing all three parts of the DSA test, you'll be awarded a green badge indicating that you're a fully qualified instructor.
From time-to-time we may offer to sponsor (not financially) a trainee instructor and help them to get there pink badge, which means that they've only passed parts one and two of the tests. Please contact us for further information.
